After 4 years of hard work converting a former pub into a community centre for the local area, The Magpie Centre has finally opened its doors to the public earlier today. The former Magpie Tavern pub closed a number of years ago and the premises was soon after acquired by the neighbouring All Saints Community Project Trust - who had the ambition to convert it into a community centre since 30 years ago. The £300,000 project will enable the community centre to be used for a wide range of events and activities, as well as support, for everybody from all backgrounds and ages in the area. The Magpie Community Centre has offices, a community cafe and kitchen, interview and training rooms, and a large room for hire to host events and activities. The pub garden to the rear of the site has also been transformed, with vegetables which will be used fresh for the cafe. The community centre opened its doors to the public on Saturday, September 12 at noon, and a tour of the new centre, as well as refreshments and speeches, also took place to celebrate the opening of a long, but exciting project to serve for the local area.
