Wheelie bins for Medway's general waste? That's the vision for some residents as a recent petition organised by locals has been submitted in a bid to stamp out Medway's growing litter problem. Nearly 130 local residents have signed the petition, calling Medway Council to provide residents with general waste wheelie bins to "stop the mess on the streets from black sacks". Could the days of black bin bags be over in Medway? - © Getty Images While official advice on the Medway Council website does not rule out residents from leaving their rubbish out the night before their collection day, instead advising them to leave it outside their property by 7am, it is thought that foxes are to blame for attacking and ripping up the bin bags, leaving Medway's roads blighted with baby nappies to food peelings. Towns up and down the country are also facing similar problems with the contents of bin bags left strewn across residential streets. In Milton Keynes, a local council is preparing a public consultation for the proposed switch from bin bags to wheelie bins for general household rubbish due to 'nuisance birds', while the residents of Darlington have branded identical plans in their town a "rubbish idea", as it may prove problematic for elderly and less mobile residents to negotiate the wheelie bins. The petition comes just months before Medway Council's waste contract with Veolia is terminated, before it is handed over to Medway Norse in October 2019, who will become responsible for the weekly collection of rubbish from Medway's households. It is expected the lead petitioner will receive a response from the council, usually within 10 working days, explaining the action the council proposes to take. You can view the e-petition on the Medway Council website. Future Chatham will follow any developments regarding the petition and will publish any updates as, and when, they are forthcoming. Being one of only two cinemas serving the Medway Towns, with just a Cineworld located at Medway Valley Leisure Park in Rochester, the Odeon cinema at Chatham Dockside consists of 9 screens, showing both 2D and 3D films for all ages. The latest major upgrade to the multiplex was around 2014 with the opening of an on-site Costa Coffee store.
